Keynote's President meets Maria from Sesame Street
This fall Katrina Smith, Keynote's president, made a trip out to New York City to meet with some exciting new speakers in person. Sonia Manzano, Sesame Street's Maria, kindly made time to have lunch with Katrina in the city.
Sonia has been with Sesame Street ever since her university days in the 1970's, not only as a long-standing cast member but also as a writer. She has now garnered 15 Emmy awards as part of the writing team for the show. Her many other accomplishments include performances on major New York stages, writing two children's books (one of which was turned into a successful musical theater production), writing columns and blogs for both Sesame Workshop and other national publications like Catalina Magazine, and winning the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Award.
So that Katrina's kids would believe that their mom actually met Maria in person, they posed for this photo in the lobby of the restaurant. Despite Sonia's many other accomplishments and awards in the grownup world, the kids couldn't believe that she was a real person who didn't just live on Sesame Street with Big Bird and Snuffleupagus.
Sesame Street celebrated its 40th anniversary on November 10th, 2009 . What began as a groundbreaking show 40 years ago is still considered one of the best shows for children on television today.
|“Thank you again[Maria Murnane] for…sharing your story with us! I greatly enjoyed your talk and I was actually inspired by it to the point where I quit my job yesterday! I have been doing advertising sales at my campus newspaper for a year and I have absolutely hated it...After listening to you, however, I decided that I needed to just do it and trust that I'll be able to find something better."|
