For more than thirty years, Dr. Loretta Long has entertained and educated early learners. She is a dynamic actress, role model, mentor to children and adolescents from elementary school to college, and is best known for the role she has created as "Susan" on Sesame Street. She has been with the show since its first season, and has enjoyed watching her role evolve from housewife to nurse to working mother over the years. She has toured all over the U.S. as a motivational speaker on a variety of topics, and conducts diversity work shops for parents, librarians and educators.
Dr. Long is a sought after educator and consultant who holds a doctorate degree in education from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Long has joined several institutions as a distinguished visiting scholar, teaching courses with themes such as multicultural perspectives; urban education; multicultural education and the media; education in culturally diverse neighborhoods; African-American history for young children; and sexual; racial and ethnic stereotyping of women in the media. She has also made presentations on a wide range of topics for a multitude of seminars, conferences, lectures, panels, speeches and workshops. School districts throughout the east coast area have engaged her services and expertise in the area of media, cultural diversity and education.
Loretta Long has always made herself available for community-oriented productions, and has appeared on television programs for major companies or community groups. She has also performed in five shows sponsored community organizations.
One of her latest projects was writing her book called Courtney's Birthday Party. With energetic prose, Dr. Long tackles a tough subject, reminding us that prejudice is often learned through the things that are left unsaid. At the same time, she inspires us to see that it is possible for adults to learn valuable lessons from the friendships forged by their children.
