Ecommerce/Internet | Economy | Finance | Technology | Environmentalism | Energy Tapan Munroe, Ph.D., is a well-known author, speaker, consultant and advisor in economics. His expertise includes innovation economics, energy economics, regional economics, and high-tech industry analysis. Dr. Munroe's current research and writings focus on the economics of innovation and economies of innovation regions such as Silicon Valley and High Tech San Diego. He serves as a lifetime member of the Board of Advisors of the Center for Pacific Rim Studies at the University of San Francisco; and a member of the University of California President's Board on Science and Innovation. Dr. Munroe has served as a trustee of the UC Merced Foundation, and as a director of the California State University Institute in Long Beach, California. He served as the Chief Economist for Pacific Gas & Electric Company for more than a decade. He was also a former President of the National Association of Business Economists, Bay Area Chapter; a former member of the National Petroleum Council Task Force on Oil Prices; former Quarterly Chair for the Commonwealth Club of California; and the former Chair of the Economics Committee of the Edison Electric Institute in Washington, D.C. He was a Member of the Advisory Board of City National Bank in San Francisco for seven years. Dr. Munroe holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado where he was awarded Colorado fellowship and membership in honor societies Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Epsilon. He is also a graduate of the University of Chicago Executive Training Program, a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and a Deutsche Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) fellow at the University of Augsburg in West Germany. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a Professor and Chair for the Department of Economics at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. In 1998 and 1999, he was the holder of the Kiriyama Distinguished Professorship for Asia Pacific Studies at the University of San Francisco. A widely published writer, Dr. Munroe has authored three books relating to Silicon Valley including Dot-com to Dot-bomb--Understanding the Dot-Com Boom, Bust and Resurgence, (2004, Moraga Press), Silicon Valley: Ecology of Innovation (2008, Science Parks Association of Spain, APTE), and What Makes Silicon Valley Tick? (2009, Nova Vista Publications). His latest book with coauthors Mary Walshok and Henry Devries is entitled Closing America's Job Gap (January 2011, WBusiness Books). Dr. Tapan Munroe has been a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner and the Journal of Corporate Renewal. Since 1988, he has been writing a column for several Bay Area News Group papers including the Oakland Tribune, the Contra Costa Times, and other bay region newspapers. He is a commentator on both regional and national radio and TV news programs.
