Biography

Considered the world's greatest dealmaker, Herb Cohen has been a practicing negotiator for the past four decades, intimately involved in some of the world's headline dramas, from hostile corporate takeovers to hostage negotiations. As a result of his extensive experience and unique presentation style, Mr. Cohen is internationally renowned as someone who can articulate and explain the complexities of selling and negotiations.

While serving as an advisor to Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan on combating terrorism, Herb Cohen was involved in the Iranian hostage crisis and credited with helping to shape the U.S. government's response to both the hijacking of TWA Flight 847 and the seizure by terrorists of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro. More recently, the White House has sought his input and advice on a myriad of problems, from domestic political strategy to the plague of international terrorism.

His clients have included business executives, entrepreneurs, sports and theatrical agents; large corporations as well as governmental agencies such as the Department of State, the FBI, the CIA, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and The U.S. Department of Justice. He was actively involved in the negotiations that settled both the NFL's Football Player's Strike and the General Motors Chevymobile Litigation. Herb Cohen also participated in the START Arms Control Negotiations with the Soviet Union.

Herb Cohen's analysis, insights and humorous view of many of these high-level happenings have appeared in many international publications, and he himself has been the subject of articles in numerous publications such as TIME magazine, People, the Economist, the New Yorker, Newsweek, Fortune Small Business, Rolling Stone and even Playboy magazine. In these writings he has been called the "World's Best Negotiator" and referred to as "America's foremost convention speaker, presenting serious subjects with such humor and dramatic flair that they become pure entertainment."

With his classic bestseller, You Can Negotiate Anything, Herb Cohen provided crucial negotiating tools to millions of people. The book was on the New York Times bestseller list for 39 weeks, was translated into twenty-one languages, and sold two and a half million copies. His latest book, Negotiate This! By Caring...But Not T-H-A-T Much, is an entertaining and indispensable look at the art and practice of negotiating beyond the business world. In a self-deprecating, often hilarious manner, Herb Cohen provides tools to negotiate with everyone from teenagers to clients or customers.

Bringing his vast knowledge and unique negotiating experiences to the podium, Herb Cohen teaches audiences powerful yet subtle negotiating techniques to help in every business, career, or relationship. A guest on the Tonight Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, and the Larry King television and radio programs, Herb Cohen is one of the most highly sought-after experts on selling and negotiation.
