Biography

Celebrity designer Chris Madden is the force behind the multi-million dollar home furnishings empire that spans publishing, television design, and licensing. Her message of "Turning Your Home Into a Haven" has been shared with millions of people throughout America, through her television appearances - she was design correspondent for the Oprah Show and hosted her own TV show on HGTV for eight seasons - her 16 books, including Haven: Finding the Keys to Your Personal Decorating Style, as well as A Room of Her Own: Women's Personal Spaces, now in its eleventh printing. Her magazine, At Home with Chris Madden, became available in May 2005 nationwide. It illustrates Chris Madden's unique decorating philosophy of home as a place of sanctuary, comfort, and rejuvenation.

Introduced in 2004, "Chris Madden for the JCPenney Home Collection" is the company's largest home furnishings launch in its 100-year history. Based on her three decorating lifestyles, "Adventurous," "Romantic" and "Serene," which Chris Madden developed over three decades, the collection features a complete line of home furnishings, including furniture, bedding, bath, window treatments, rugs, lamps, wall art and decorative accessories. Her Chris Madden Home collection has grown to 2,000 pieces, from leopard-print carpeting to pesto green bath rugs.

Chris Madden's life-long passion for design began with a scholarship to The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She then entered magazine publishing for Sports Illustrated, where she learned the basics of journalistic photography. Stints at major book publishers followed, including Random House, G. P. Putnam & Sons, and Farrar, Straus & Giroux, where Chris Madden was director of publicity. After a decade in publishing, Chrus Madden returned to her roots: interior design. Her first book, Interior Visions, an insiders' view of America's top designer showcase houses, instantly became a bestseller. With the publication of A Room Of Her Own, Chris Madden's vision and message were fully realized.

In 1976, Chris Madden started her own public relations firm and began writing books on decorating and show houses. She hit her stride with her Bathrooms and Kitchens for Clarkson Potter. In 1995, HGTV selected Chris Madden to be one of the network's four original hosts; her program, Interiors by Design, ran for eight years.

Chris Madden was named the spokesperson for Partnership for the Homeless' Furnish a Future program, New York City's only free furniture bank for former homeless families and individuals. In her role with the nonprofit Furnish a Future, Chris Madden helps raise public awareness of homelessness and assists the furniture bank in raising the funds and home furnishings to expand services. Her hope is to inspire her industry, all New Yorkers, and all Americans to become more active in combating homelessness.
